Can we trust the GPs?
Does the public trust the GPs and are they right to do so? Are older people discriminated against in our healthcare system and are GPs party to that? Do GPs take rationing decisions and should they? Are GPs really interested in keeping the population healthy?
GPs have been – along with other doctors – shown to discriminate against some groups of patients. We need to tease out why, and GPs need to be clear with the public. Yet in almost all areas GPs are more trusted than almost all other professionals – and there is a reason for that. So though GPs need to change, it is really the system that needs to change even more. And – with some exceptions – we can, broadly, trust the GPs.

Locum GPs have always played an important role in general practice. Under the nGMS contract, GPs are required to raise the standard of patient data quality and are looking to locums to support them in this task.
Training provides the essential skills a locum GP needs to complete an electronic patient record.
Working with locum GP agencies and principal GPs, EMIS has devised a training session which will ensure that delegates have foundation knowledge of using the EMIS clinical system during consultations. We are delivering the course in 2 ways; as a full day hands on course at our training centre in Leeds, or as a series of web based training sessions delivered by one of our accredited trainers.
On completion of the course delegates will receive a Certificate of Accreditation.

Doctors, nurses and other clinicians can change their consultation behaviour in ways that
• Improve clinical outcomes for patients
• Improve satisfaction for both patient and clinician
• Promote effective use of clinician’s time
• Reduce medico-legal risk
Research makes it clear that learner behaviour change requires practice, observation, feedback & rehearsal. Calgary Cambridge is the most comprehensive framework available - combining evidence of skills that matter, learning with best evidenced teaching methods.
Several Speciality Training Committees have mandated our skills based training for SpRs. Most college exams now test this competence. Revalidation against the principles of “Good Medical Practice” is expected to require evidence of skill development in this domain.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT TRAINING SESSION
The gradual refinement of assessment methods introduced for the clinical years of the MBBS curriculum has brought about a more robust scrutiny of students' professional behaviour. The benefit of this has been the identification in a systematic way of inappropriate behaviours, actions or general concerns. This session will look at the different routes available to us in resolving such matters. The event will involve plenary and small group sessions and case studies will support the discussions.

The formal part of the evening will be preceeded by a hot buffet (6.45- 7.30pm) to facilitate networking. If you wish to attend for the buffet please email me at pfwright@doctors.org.uk
The formal part of the evening will start at 730pm- 9pm.
The exact details of the programme will be confirmed on the nelg website nearer the date but is likely to comprise a brief talk 20mins followed by time in smaller groups (optin between SDLGs, Balint or comentoring options) with time to feedback discussion later in the evening.
SELF DIRECTED LEARNING GROUPS (SDLGs), BALINT GROUPS (BG) AND CO-MENTORING GROUPS (CMG)
This evening aims to:
-increase awareness of the value of these various kinds of professional groups
-facilitate networking between doctors wishing to set up new groups or join groups
-facilitate sharing of good practice between existing groups
-facilitate collective learning : what have we learn over the the last year about models which work well for self -directed learning groups
What are they and why might I want to join one ?
1) Education and Support. They are groups of practitioners who meet regularly to address their shared professional development needs. Broadly this means meeting for educational purposes and also for peer support. For example:
a) the group may agree a set of priority topics which all are interested in receiving an update on. These are shared out amongst individual group members who bring the prepared topics to help others get up to speed.
b) each member to volunteer to keep track of a certain publication for a few months and report back with important articles.
2) Benefiting from the work of others not just your own. Everyone benefits from the collective efforts of the group rather than each practitioner having to be totally self reliant to keep up to date and feeling overwhelmed by the volume of new publication guidelines and directives published.
3) Tricky subjects are better dealt with by talking: There are particular topics which are difficult to get to grips with without discussion and exploration e.g. policy changes in the NHS such as practice based commissioning, ethical problems, professional development decisions, significant events, and complaints. We all look up different Puns and Dens and learn about new resources.
4) Motivation Because groups set topics and share them out tasks may feel more achievable which helps motivation. Peer expectations also have a beneficial effect on personal habits.
5) Isolation. Practitioners may feel isolated at work either because there are infrequent opportunities for meeting with others during working time, because they are a locum, or they are not at work when practice meetings occur, or they are the only salaried doctor in their practice. Maslow said that according to a “hierarchy of needs” individual performance is improved when people have a sense of “belonging” to a social network.
6) Revalidation is likely to impact differently on different doctors. Locums may be under special scrutiny unless they are seen to work in a managed environment. Forming a SDLG may be an important first step in this process.
BALINT GROUPS:
Dr Suchdev from Gateshead will be attending to talk to us about Balint groups.
Co-mentoring- Dr Jane Dammers (GP choice) will be attending to talk about co-mentoring groups.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT TRAINING SESSION
'Roleplaynorth Communication Skills'
A simulated patient (sometimes referred to as a “standardised” patient) is someone who has been carefully trained to portray the emotional, symptomatic and physical
characteristics of an actual patient. The simulated patient is able to express the same symptoms and even to demonstrate the same physical examination findings as the “real” patient and in addition is trained to provide feedback to students on their performance during the encounter. These simulations, and the use of role-play, are playing an increasingly important role in the education and assessment of healthcare professionals allowing instructors and examiners to carefully control the clinical learning experience. This session will look at the uses of simulated patients and allow participants to practice setting up and running role-plays.
